Rewind to my grad school days, when “AI” was more of a buzzword than a reality. For my project, I had the audacious goal to harness the power of Neural Networks to predict weather patterns in Oahu. Guess what? It worked pretty well! 🌦️👨‍🎓

Fast forward to today, and the algorithms have evolved exponentially. We’re not just talking about marginal improvements but quantum leaps in predictive accuracy. It’s like comparing a vintage car to a modern-day supercar — both get you places, but oh boy, the difference in speed and efficiency! 🚗💨

NWP, with its reliance on atmospheric state discretization and solving complex partial differential equations, is both accurate and computationally demanding. It requires hours of processing on supercomputers. AI and deep learning, however, are changing the game. By training deep neural networks to decipher the relationship between current and future atmospheric states, AI accelerates weather forecasting, despite initial accuracy trade-offs compared to traditional methods. 🌧️⏲️

A shining example of AI’s prowess in this field is Pangu-Weather. This system, a trailblazer in AI-based weather forecasting, integrates height information into three dimensions using a 3D Earth-specific transformer (3DEST) architecture. It significantly enhances the accuracy of atmospheric state predictions across different pressure levels, making gains over previous two-dimensional models. 🌐📊

Pangu-Weather’s approach includes training deep neural networks with extensive historical weather data, particularly the ERA5 dataset spanning from 1979 to 2017. The networks, designed for various lead times, process 3D data through an encoder-decoder architecture, embodying approximately 64 million parameters. The system’s methodology involves training deep neural networks with extensive historical weather data, specifically the ERA5 dataset, covering a period from 1979 to 2017. The deep networks in Pangu-Weather are trained for different lead times (1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, and 24 hours) using a large amount of computational resources, such as 192 NVIDIA Tesla-V100 GPUs. The 3D data are processed through an encoder-decoder architecture, with each 3D deep network containing approximately 64 million parameters. 🌪️💻
